Project Background

The Inuvialuit Energy Security Project Ltd. (IESPL) proposed Inuvialuit Energy Security Project (IESP) is located in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories. The land and resources where the project is located are Inuvialuit owned.

The proposed project involves the construction of a gas plant that would convert natural gas into liquid natural gas (LNG) and synthetic diesel, which could be transported to customers for power and heating application.

The Project was screened and approved by the Environmental Impact Screening Committee under the Inuvialuit Final Agreement on 25 January 2021.

The proposed project would be regulated by the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) under the Northwest Territories Oil and Gas Operations Act. The CER holds responsibility for regulatory oversight of oil and gas operations and activities in the onshore part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

Participant Funding

Indigenous peoples and organizations potentially affected in the project area can apply for a grant to participate.

Grant for Indigenous groups

  • $20,000 for Intervenor
  • $5,000 for Commenter

Grant for Indigenous individuals

  • $2,000 for Intervenor
  • $500 for Commenter
