We are the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). We work for you to keep energy moving safely across Canada. We work in the public interest. This means we make decisions based on things that matter to everyone instead of only what’s best for a few. We oversee how energy moves in Canada. We are in charge of keeping watch over the companies operating oil and gas pipelines and electrical powerlines that cross a national, provincial or territorial border.
Damage prevention/Emergency management
One of the biggest hazards for pipelines, is people digging without knowing where they are buried. That is why it is so important that everyone living or working near pipelines understands the risks and take precautions.
In an emergency, we are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Usually, we can be on scene within hours of being notified. We oversee the company’s response to make sure they are prioritizing public safety and doing everything they can to bring the incident under control.
Companies must follow the all the rules in the CER Act and its regulations. Audits and inspections help us spot potential issues, and take action before they become problems. If we find any, we do what it takes to get companies back on track and to keep them from repeating the same mistakes in the future.
At the Canada Energy Regulator, we hold companies to some of the strictest safety and environmental standards in the world. Our work protect habitats, animals, plants, water and farmland, and controls air emissions from projects.
