Edson Mainline Expansion approved with 25 conditions

June 23, 2021

As announced on June 18, 2021, the Government of Canada approved NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd.’s (NGTL) request to expand its natural gas pipeline system in northeast Alberta through the Edson Mainline Expansion Project.

Most of the natural gas transported by the expansion will move from the Peace River area to growing markets in central and southern Alberta. The project involves the construction and operation of approximately 85 km of natural gas pipeline loops in two sections, along with the associated facilities.

As part of the Commission’s Recommendation in November 2020, the Commission included 24 conditions related to Indigenous peoples, construction activities, safety measures and standards and environmental monitoring. With this approval, the federal government added one condition related to capacity funding for Indigenous peoples to review post-certificate filings.

The CER will issue the Certificate for the Edson Mainline Expansion Project to NGTL in the coming days.
