Canada Energy Regulator responds to incident at Trans Mountain’s Sumas Pump Station

Incident Notification: The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has been notified of an above ground crude oil release that occurred early on June 13, 2020, at Trans Mountain’s Sumas Pump Station in Abbotsford, BC.

The spill has been contained and clean-up is underway. The company has reported that there is no risk to human safety. A CER Inspection Officer is being deployed to oversee the company’s response and monitor compliance.

Trans Mountain has contacted the local Indigenous communities. The CER has notified the Trans Mountain Indigenous Advisory Monitoring Committee and will continue to update them as appropriate.  

The CER’s top priority is protecting people and the environment. Trans Mountain will be held accountable to ensure the site is cleaned up and that their response meets with the CER’s strict safety and environmental standards.
