Work–life balance

CER employees do important and challenging work, but they also have time to enjoy their personal lives. The CER offers a variety of work arrangements, such as flexible working hours, a hybrid schedule (at-home and in-office work), leave with income averaging, and the ability to accumulate and use banked time.

The CER also holds social activities throughout the year to bring fun into the workplace and to get to know colleagues and leadership better. You can expect holiday parties, team-building activities, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of summer and winter activities.

Diversity, inclusion and reconciliation

The CER is firmly committed to cultivating a workforce that truly represents the rich tapestry of Canada. We firmly believe that the strength and effectiveness of the CER lies in our ability to mirror the diversity of the Canadian population we serve. Our unwavering dedication is to construct and champion a workforce that embodies diversity, equity, and inclusivity, reflecting the entire spectrum of Canadian society. Some examples of groups lead by and for employees include the Black Employee Network, the Equity Network, the Indigenous Employee Circle, and Le Collectif franco. We welcome and encourage all applicants, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender expression, socio-economic background, or lived experience.

In our pursuit of employment equity, we encourage you to self-identify voluntarily if you belong to any of the designated groups as per the Employment Equity Act: persons with a disability, Indigenous Peoples, members of a visible minority, or women, when you apply.

Learning opportunities

The CER offers a variety of opportunities for professional and personal growth. CER employees are encouraged and supported at every stage of their learning journey, beginning with a discussion with their leader about their individual learning and development plan, which ensures that they can engage in continuous learning and development throughout their career.

Along with completing a learning and development plan, employees are encouraged to learn in their current role, expand their work experience with assignments within the CER, and take advantage of interchange opportunities.

The CER believes in learning through on-the-job training, coaching and mentoring, networking, and learning opportunities via conferences and communities of practice. It also promotes excellent courses hosted by the Canada School of Public Service and other external learning organizations.
