More environmental information on demand

May 5, 2021

We are always looking for new ways to make important CER information easier to find.

For the first time, you can now find raw data on contaminated sites that has been submitted by the companies we regulate. This information dates back to August 2018, the same time that we started having companies submit their information to us online. We will also start sharing the annual updates from companies on each contaminated site as we receive them this year. We told companies [Document C12305-1] this was happening earlier this year.

If a company finds contamination along its pipeline or right-of-way, they must report it to us. What and how they have to report is explained in our Remediation Process Guide. It doesn’t matter if the contamination came from a pipeline or from somewhere else, it must be reported.

Companies submit this information to us through an online form called a “notice of contamination” or NOC. The NOC contains information like where the contamination was found, how many people live nearby, where the contamination came from (if known) and what actions are being taken to address the situation. Companies must also notify any Indigenous communities, landowners or municipalities that could potentially be affected.

All of this information helps us weigh the risks associated with the contamination and decide what needs to be done to clean it up. The annual updates companies provide tell us what has already been done and what still needs to happen. This is on top of all the other work we do to make sure people and the environment are protected.

The information on contaminated sites can be found our online filing system called RegDocs, and we have created a guide to make it easier to help you find the information you are looking for. Soon we will also be posting the same information to a place called Open Government. We already have lots of information shared there. All you have to do is search “Canada Energy Regulator” to find it.

While you’re at it, check out some of the other projects we have been working on to put our data at your fingertips:

This is just the start of how we plan to demystify our work and make the information we have easier for you to find. Stay tuned.
