Electricity Generation by Fuel Type and Region

Electricity Generation by Fuel Type and Region

Description:

This graph shows Canadian electricity generation by province from 2005 to 2040 in the Reference Case. Hydroelectricity provides the majority of electric generation in Quebec, B.C., Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Yukon. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia have primarily thermal-based complemented by a growing non-hydro renewables. Thermal units that are fueled with refined products make up large shares of the generation mix in Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut.

The type of energy used to generate electricity varies substantially between regions because of resource accessibility and historical infrastructure development.

Electricity Capacity
by Fuel Type

Since 2005, cumulative installed nonhydro renewable electricity capacity has grown almost 700%, from 2 GW to more than 18 GW in 2017.

Electricity Capacity by Fuel Type

Description:

This graph shows total electricity capacity by fuel type from 2005 to 2040. In 2005 total capacity was 121.9 GW and this increases to 171.9 GW in 2040.

Renewable Electricity Generation by Fuel Type

Description:

This graph shows electricity generation from renewables. In 2005 total generation was 366.8 TW.h and this increases to 524.6 TW.h in 2040. The biggest fuel type is hydro and makes up 439.5 TW.h of generation in 2040.

Renewable Electricity Generation
by Fuel Type

By 2040 hydro contributes 84% of Canada’s renewable generation.

Capacity Additions and
Retirements by 2040

By 2040 renewables account for 63% of additions to capacity.

Capacity Additions and Retirements by 2040

Description:

This graph shows the total additions and retirements of electric generation capacity by 2040 for the Reference Case, and breaks it down by fuel source. These additions include 13.3 MW of natural gas, 10.9 MW of wind, 8.9 MW of hydro, 3.2 MW of solar, and 0.8 MW of biomass. Retirements include 8.1 MW of coal, 3.4 MW of Nuclear, 0.2 MW of natural gas, and 0.7 MW of oil.
