Termination of Hearing
On October 5, 2017, the NEB received notice from TransCanada [Filing A86594] withdrawing its Energy East and Eastern Mainline project applications. The NEB has no further work to complete on these projects and the hearing record is now closed.

The Projects
Energy East
Energy East was a 4,500-kilometre pipeline proposed to carry 1.1 million barrels of crude oil per day from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries in Eastern Canada.
The project included:
- Converting an existing natural gas pipeline to an oil transportation pipeline;
- Constructing new pipeline in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec and New Brunswick to link up with the converted pipe; and
- Constructing the associated facilities, pump stations and tank terminals required to move crude oil from Alberta to Québec and New Brunswick, including marine facilities that enable access to other markets by ship.

Eastern Mainline
The Eastern Mainline project consisted of approximately 279 km of new gas pipeline and related components and which would have been constructed in four sections, beginning near Markham, Ontario and finishing near the community of Brouseville, Ontario. About 203 km of the proposed 279 km pipeline would have beeninstalled adjacent to existing pipeline, railway and public highway rights-of-way.
The application for the Project was filed to enable TransCanada to continue to meet its commercial obligations following the proposed transfer of certain Canadian Mainline facilities to Energy East Pipeline Ltd. for the conversion of those facilities to crude oil from natural gas service (Asset Transfer). The Asset Transfer made up a portion of the Energy East application.
TransCanada was not, in this application, seeking approvals pursuant to Part IV of the NEB Act, relating to recovery of the cost of the Project through tolls.
