TransCanada Keystone files construction update

TransCanada Keystone crews have finished clearing portions of the Keystone XL Pipeline route. In an update filed with the NEB on March 18, 2019 [Filing A98374], the company said that its Winter Clearing Program wrapped up on March 4.

Clearing is one of the first steps in pipeline construction. Vegetation, such as trees, bushes and shrubs are removed from the right-of way before additional activities and work can begin.

The NEB approved TransCanada Keystone’s request to begin the work on January 21, as long as the company continued to consult with Indigenous groups and avoided working in locations where archaeological sites had been identified. The clearing work was restricted to the project’s north spread, which runs from Hardisty, Alberta to Lakesend, in eastern Alberta.

In its update, TransCanada Keystone said the company will continue ongoing work at the Hardisty terminal and at eight pump stations in May, 2019. If the NEB approves the TransCanada Keystone Environmental Protection Plan [Filing A93792] filed for the project, the company plans to begin clearing and grading work along the pipeline right of way this summer.
