Update: Latest information on the incident at Enbridge’s Line 3 Herschel pump station

May 14, 2020

A CER Inspection Officer conducted a field inspection May 1-2, 2020, following a 150 cubic meter crude oil spill at Enbridge’s Line 3 pump station facility near Herschel, Saskatchewan, on April 30, 2020. All free-standing oil has been recovered and the company is recovering the remaining contaminated soil. Enbridge is expected to remediate the site to the CER’s strict environmental standards outlined in the Remediation Process Guide.

Once complete, the inspection report will be publicly available on the CER website. CER regulations require Enbridge to submit a detailed incident report as soon as practicable, which will be used to further evaluate Enbridge’s incident response. This information will also be amalgamated and reported as part of the CER’s incident data. This data is used to identify potential trends and to inform our risked based approach to company oversight.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is investigating this incident.
